Spring Cleaning Your Skin: The Post-Winter Reset Your Face Needs

Winter in the Toronto area is not kind to skin.

Months of dry indoor heat, cold outdoor air, reduced UV protection, and — for many women —hormonal fluctuations that accelerate moisture loss leave skin looking dull, tight, and uneven by the time April arrives.

The instinct to reach for a richer moisturizer is understandable. But a true skin reset goes deeper than what you apply at the surface.

Here's what we see clinically as the season changes — and how to address it effectively.

What Winter Actually Does to Your Skin

Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Add forced-air heating indoors, and the result is a sustained environment that depletes your skin barrier over months, not days.

For women in perimenopause or menopause, the impact is compounded. Estrogen supports the skin's ability to retain water and produce collagen. As estrogen declines, skin becomes more reactive to environmental stress — including cold and dryness.

By spring, many of our patients describe their skin as:

  • Dull and flat in tone

  • Rough or flaky in texture

  • Tighter than usual, especially after washing

  • More prone to redness or sensitivity

  • Showing fine lines that weren't visible in fall

All this requires a thoughtful approach.

Step One: Reassess Your Cleanser

The cleanser is the most overlooked step in a skin reset.

Foaming cleansers that work well in summer can be too stripping after winter. If your skin feels tight immediately after washing, that's a signal. Switching temporarily to a gentle, cream-based or milky cleanser reduces baseline inflammation and allows your barrier to begin recovering.

This is not about spending more. It's about matching product function to your skin's current state.

Step Two: Introduce (or Reintroduce) Active Ingredients

Spring is an ideal time to reintroduce actives you may have paused during winter.

Retinol promotes cell turnover and can help with uneven texture and dullness accumulated overwinter. If you've been consistent, this may mean increasing your concentration slightly. If you're new to retinol, spring — before high-UV summer months — is a reasonable time to start, with guidance.

Vitamin C remains one of the most evidence-supported topical antioxidants for brightening and protecting against oxidative stress. Look for stabilized formulations (L-ascorbic acid or derivatives) and store them properly — Vitamin C oxidizes quickly once opened.

Hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin from the environment. It works best when the environment has adequate humidity — which spring provides more than winter.

At Restore Wellness, we carry the Alastin Skincare

line, which we select for its clinical evidence base and compatibility with medical-grade treatments. Our team can help you identify which products are appropriate for your skin type and current concerns.

Step Three: Consider Whether Topicals Are Enough

For mild dullness and winter dryness, a refined routine is often sufficient.

For moderate to significant concerns — persistent textural irregularity, loss of firmness, acne scarring, or uneven tone that hasn't responded to topicals — surface-level products have real limitations.

This is where Morpheus8 enters the conversation.

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered at precise depths beneath the skin. Rather than working at the surface, it stimulates your skin's own collagen-producing response from within.

Results are gradual and cumulative — Maximal results are most visible 4–6 months after final treatment. Many of our patients plan a series of 3 sessions beginning in spring, so they're seeing results through summer.

There's also a practical reason to start now: Morpheus8 requires sun avoidance during healing. Spring, before the heaviest UV months, offers a natural window.

Step Four: Update Your SPF — Every Single Day

If you do one thing this April, let it be this.

UVA rays — the ones responsible for collagen degradation and pigmentation — are present year-round and penetrate glass. The reason many people notice increased sun damage is not because summer sun is uniquely strong; it's because they stop applying SPF in October and resume in June.

The gap matters.

We recommend a mineral broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 or higher applied every morning, including cloudy days and days you spend primarily indoors near windows. The

Alastin SilkSHIELD AllMineral SPF 30 is a formulation we trust and use ourselves — it layers well under makeup and doesn't leave a white cast.

What a Spring Reset Looks Like at Restore Wellness

A typical spring consultation covers:

  • Review of your current skincare routine

  • Assessment of your skin's barrier function and concerns

  • Discussion of whether a Morpheus8 series is appropriate and timely

  • Product recommendations based on your skin type, lifestyle, and budget

We don't recommend treatments for their own sake. If your skin is responding well to topicals, we'll tell you. If a more targeted intervention would offer better results with your specific concerns, we'll explain why — without pressure.

When to Come In

If you've been thinking about booking a consultation since the fall — this is your signal.

Spring bookings for Morpheus8 fill quickly, partly because patients planning summer travel or events want their results established well in advance. If a summer series is on your mind, April and early May are the right time to start.
